Dear Friend:You know that God has given you a special cross, which He asks you to carry every day. Only you and He know the true meaning of walking under its weight, and only you and He know what it truly costs you each day. However, did you know that this same cross can also be converted into a source of tremendous grace and in turn, the currency of salvation for millions of people?
God, in his mysterious and loving plan, chose the cross as the one path of redemption – and he chose it for His own Son. When he offers you this same path, He is inviting you to unite yourself in a very special way to the saving mission of His Son.
We know that the condition for following Christ is taking up our cross each day and following Him. We also know that whoever follows Him will not lose his reward. When we live a life of grace, as children of the Church, it is possible for our pain to have infinite merit because we can unite it to the pain of Christ Himself, thereby giving it redemptive value.
Along with your cross, you have received a mission: to collaborate with Christ in the redemption of souls – precisely through your suffering. To help you fulfill your mission of reaching heaven and “bringing” many souls along with you, you have also received a spiritual “satchel,” or backpack, which is the only piece of luggage you can take with you on your journey.
In it, you can place each soul for whom you want to offer your life – along with each sacrifice, each pain, every moment of difficulty or joy – in short, all the acts of love you succeed in making throughout the day. Not one of them is lost or useless… because pain passes, but the merits are eternal when our suffering is united to the redemptive sacrifice of Christ.
In this way, your spiritual “satchel” is the great treasure which can convert your cross into an instrument of hope for your loved ones – and many others who you may have never met, but who need you to offer your pain, united to the pain of Christ, in order to be saved.
When you reach heaven and see how your cross has been transformed; when you see the thousands of souls who have reached eternity thanks to your sacrifices offered with love, you will realize that it was all worth it… and you will understand why God wanted to unite you in a special way to the cross of His Son, giving you the gift of a special cross.
You cannot put down your cross; you know it will be your companion for life. What you can do is convert it into heaven for thousands of souls, make it your apostolate, and, through the power of prayer and sacrifice, give it the meaning and purpose that it is truly meant to have. Even from a hospital bed, you can stop a war or save a soul! The only thing you have to do is live in grace so your offerings will have merit in the eyes of God.
